Readers: you are invited to continue to build the world of The Ark with your own contributions. Were there gaps in the narrative you had an urge to fill? Characters you wanted to see more of? Scenes you wished to experience from another point of view? Were you intrigued by what might be happening in the world outside the bunker?

Why not share your ideas with other fans of The Ark? Create additional documents to add to The Ark: blog posts, emails, memos or BLiPPs. Or let your version of events take another form entirely: write a poem, a short story, a flash fiction, a radio play. Draw a cartoon, record a conversation or create a video; paint a picture, compile a playlist, render your vision in PhotoShop. The sky’s the limit: the world of The Ark is yours to build.

Fan Fiction FAQs

What is fan fiction?

Fan fiction is what literature might look like if it were reinvented from scratch after a nuclear apocalypse by a band of brilliant pop-culture junkies trapped in a sealed bunker. They don’t do it for money. That’s not what it’s about. The writers write it and put it up online just for the satisfaction. They’re fans, but they’re not silent, couch-bound consumers of media. The culture talks to them, and they talk back to the culture in its own language.
—Lev Grossman, TIME, July 07, 2011

Media scholar Henry Jenkins explains the correlation between transmedia storytelling and fan fiction:

The encyclopedic ambitions of transmedia texts often results in what might be seen as gaps or excesses in the unfolding of the story: that is, they introduce potential plots which can not be fully told or extra details which hint at more than can be revealed. Readers, thus, have a strong incentive to continue to elaborate on these story elements, working them over through their speculations, until they take on a life of their own. Fan fiction can be seen as an unauthorized expansion of these [stories] into new directions which reflect the reader’s desire to “fill in the gaps” they have discovered in the commercially produced material.

What kind of content should readers create?
Readers can create additions to the story in any medium. These creations can include written works, photos, illustrations, videos, soundtracks, etc
What formats can be uploaded?
Written texts: Microsoft Word or Pages document (Mac)
Illustrations, photos etc: JPG or PNG
Audio Files: Soundcloud link
Videos: Vimeo or YouTube link
How do I upload fan fiction via the website?

Fan Fiction upload page

Drag your file onto the “drag your file(s) here to upload” box

Why can't I upload content anonymously?
Anonymous uploads seem to encourage people to submit inappropriate content of all stripes. Alas, there’s always a couple of idiots who ruin things for everyone else.
